Origins

NAMFORUM was founded by MJ Klein in 2026.

The idea for the community grew out of Klein's own experiments with neural amp modeling and capture technology. After creating and publishing several models, he was surprised by how rapidly some of his tones were downloaded, shared, and used by other musicians.

The response prompted a closer look at the rapidly developing field surrounding Neural Amp Modeler and related capture technologies. What initially appeared to be an interesting modeling technology was clearly becoming a much larger ecosystem of users, model creators, software developers, hardware manufacturers, and new approaches to capturing and reproducing audio equipment.

Researching the field also revealed a need that went beyond simply providing another place to exchange models. As the technology grew, new users needed somewhere to ask questions, understand how capture technology works, learn proper techniques, troubleshoot problems, compare different approaches, and benefit from the experience of others.

NAMFORUM was created to help support that growth, with education as one of its central purposes.

The scope was deliberately made broader than Neural Amp Modeler itself. TONEX, Kemper PROFILER, Neural Capture, Line 6 Proxy, and open-source projects such as AIDA-X and GuitarML all approach capture, profiling, or neural modeling in different ways. Bringing users of these technologies together provides opportunities to learn not only how a particular product works, but also the principles that apply across platforms.

That educational purpose also led to the decision to build the NAMFORUM Wiki alongside the discussion forum. The forum provides a place to ask questions, experiment, exchange experience, and develop knowledge; the Wiki provides a place to organize and preserve what has been learned.
